Who All-on-4 is for

All-on-4 is used when most or all of the teeth in one jaw are missing, failing or unrestorable. Four implants — the back two usually angled — support a fixed bridge of replacement teeth. It is sometimes chosen because it can avoid the bone grafting that placing an individual implant for every tooth might need, but not everyone has enough bone or suitable bone for it, and only a scan and an examination can tell.

How the treatment works

Assessment. A 3D scan and examination decide whether the treatment is suitable and how many implants are needed.
Surgery. Any remaining failing teeth are removed and the implants placed, usually with a temporary fixed bridge fitted soon afterwards.
Healing. The implants need months to bond with the bone.
Final bridge. Once healed, the final bridge is made and fitted, usually on a second visit.

Trips and timeline

Two trips is the usual pattern: an initial stay for surgery and the temporary bridge, then a shorter visit some months later for the final bridge. Clinics that offer a single visit should explain the clinical reasoning, and what you would wear in the meantime.

All-on-4 or All-on-6, or individual implants

All-on-6 uses two more implants for additional support and may be suggested when bone is weaker or the bridge is long. Individual implants for each missing tooth are another option, and a removable implant-retained denture is a third. A dentist who has examined you should explain why they recommend one over the others.
